Teza/Cel artykułu – Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie koncepcji wyznaczania wskaźnika half-life oraz ocena jego przydatności w różnych obszarach naukoznawstwa i bibliotekoznawstwa. Metoda badań – Artykuł opracowano na podstawie analizy piśmiennictwa, a kluczowe problemy związane ze wskaźnikiem half-life zostały zilustrowane na podstawie przykładowych danych, które przygotowano w oparciu o oryginalne idee przedstawione w piśmiennictwie. Wyniki i wnioski –Wskaźnik half-life wykorzystywany jest przed wszystkim w naukoznawczych badaniachj dyscyplin naukowych, projektowaniu typologii piśmiennictwa naukowego ze względu na kryterium czasu dezaktualizacji zawartej w nim wiedzy, jak również do modyfikowania istniejących mierników tzw. siły wpływu czasopism naukowych (impact factor). W zarządzaniu kolekcjami bibliotek jego przydatność wydaje się być relatywnie mniejsza.

Objective – The author presents the concept of half-life index calculation and evaluates its usefulness in various areas of science studies and library studies. Research method – The paper is based on the literature analysis and key issues of half-life index calculation are illustrated with sample data prepared on the basis of original concepts presented in the literature. Results and conclusions – Most often half-life index is used in science studies to research various branches of science as well as to design the typology of scholarly literature based on the period during which the knowledge included in the literature becomes outdated and to modify already existing scientific journals impact factors. The index in question appears to be less useful in library collection management.
