The first land reform was a legal process carried out at the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Its target was to significantly reduce the extent of large land owner properties, in favour of small farmers. This legislation (organised by the State Land Office) impacted considerably a number of church institutions, including the Archbishopric of Olomouc. This study aims at mapping out the course of the first land reform on the Archbishopric properties and draws special attention to the period of the episcopate of Antonín Cyril Stojan. Stojan, who was archbishop of Olomouc in the years 1921–1923, was instrumental in a number of important projects in the archdiocese of Olomouc, and was very popular with the Catholic public. He is criticized at times, however, for his specific attitude to the above-mentioned land reform. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the criticism, primarily on the basis of archive sources.
