In 1941 Department For Evaluating Foreign Fortification of the German Supreme Army Command (OKH) developed an analytical study of the Polish system of fortifications acquired in September 1939 titled “Denkschrift über die polnische Landesbefestigung”. The authors of the study concluded information of allegedly plans to fortify the Republic of Poland originated in France and were developed by the French General Staff. German analysts generally characterized the assumptions of the alleged “fortification plan” gen. Le Rond from 1928, polemical “counter-plan” of gen. Weygand from 1930 and “Little Plan” from the ‘30s, as allegedly obtained by the Polish military authorities on the basis a synthesis of these plans in France. This article is an attempt at determining the origin of the information about the alleged French plans of fortifying Poland. It also includes the results of the author’s archival search for any trace of a joint French-Polish planning as regards fortification at the turn of the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century. This search had a negative result - in the preserved resource in the Polish military archives there are no residues of such joint undertakings and the possibilities of their implementation exclude then conditions of the weakening Polish-French military alliance. The last part of the article is devoted to the reception of alleged French fortification plans by Polish military historiography, in which unverified information from a German study from 1941 are wrongly regarded as reliable and are additionally distorted by speculation unsupported by sources.
