Temat eseju stanowi praca „Sources of Social Power” Michaela Manna. Była ona pierwotnie pomyślana jako ambitna próba stworzenia analitycznej, historycznej socjologii społecznej władzy, a dwa otwierające tomy dzieła zdawały się w pewnym stopniu stanowić realizację tego zamierzenia. Wraz z publikacją trzeciego i czwartego tomu, w latach 2012 i 2013, zyskało ono jednak charakter ogólnej, socjologicznej historii władzy, bez popadania w przesadny eklektyzm, ale też niebazującej na jakiejś spójnej teorii, ani też niespecjalnie nowatorskiej w kontekście neoweberowskiej socjologii historycznej. Artykuł odnosi się także do polskiej, marginalnej recepcji dzieła Manna. Jak się wydaje, stanowi ona tyleż efekt braku zainteresowania polskich uczonych socjologią historyczną, ile skutek braku tradycji i niewielkiego zainteresowania strukturalną analizą interesów społecznych.

The essay deals with Michael Mann’s „Sources of Social Power”. His work was conceived as an ambitious attempt to write an analytical, general historical sociology of social power, and the two opening volumes seemed to fulfill the promise, at least to some extent. With the two final volumes published in 2012 and 2013 respectively, the work turned out to be a general sociological history of power, which is not overly eclectic, but neither theory-driven, nor really innovative in the context of the neo-Weberian historical sociology. The paper also touches upon Polish, rather marginal reception of the Mann’s work, which seems to result from a general lack of concern for the historical sociology itself, as well as an outcome of the absence of tradition and limited interest in the structural interests analysis.
