This article is an attempt to determine the specificity of the Belarusian literature of the interwar period. Despite the fact that Stalin’s repressions were very strong in Belarus, the Belarusian literature has never joined the anticommunist cultural discourse. Moreover, the socialist elements occurred almost in every writer’s work. The author of this article tries to prove that this situation is not determined by the writers’ fidelity to the communist system, but by their attempt to smuggle the nationalist content in literature, which on the one hand was the most attentively hunted by the censorship, and on the other ! was the Belarusian tradition. The author states that, as a result, the Belarusian literature of the interwar period became conformist and did not acquire distinctive characteristics.
