The 100th anniversary of the first world war serves as an opportunity to contemplate the outcomes of this total conflict, to commemorate those who were lost, and to reexamine what phenomenons like: war, life, and death mean according to different points of view and various experts of different fields of knowledge. This paper seeks to explain the concepts of civilization and culture that enjoyed widespread influence during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, concepts which also played an integral role in numerous arenas of social life.
