In his autobiography, initially printed in Gazeta Olsztyńska in early March 1925, Father Walenty Barczewski (1856–1928) wrote that he had actively contributed to the birth of three Polish newspapers in the region of Warmia, including Gazeta Olsztyńska. Historians were reluctant to give credence to his words. The autobiography claims that „a certain father B.[arczewski] edited and wrote articles for three Polish newspapers in Warmia: Gazeta Olsztyńska, founded in 1886, Nowiny Warmińskie, started in 1890, and Warmiak, founded in 1893. He thus contributed significantly to the preservation of the Polish language and the Polish spirit in Warmia and Mazury”. Jan Chłosta’s article discusses Father Walenty Barczewski’s collaboration with Gazeta Olsztyńska.
