The Grudziądz commandry was established by the Teutonic Order in the 1260s (before 1269). The territory of this administrative unit was initially not vast, but between 1303–1305 two quite extensive enclaves on the other side of the Vistula (in Pomeralia) were subordinated to it. Since that time the Grudziądz commander managed one of the largest territories, when compared to other Teutonic administrative units in the Kulmerland. As a result, financial revenues were substantial, and so was the number of people joining the convent, as it was one of the most important convents, next to Toruń, Brodnica and Radzyń, of the Teutonic State. Grudziądz was quite often a place where the highest Teutonic dignitaries (Provincial Masters, Grand Commanders, Grand Treasurers) ended their careers (perhaps at their own request). The reason for this was probably the safe and quiet location of the castle and city. Though retired, the Grudziądz commanders, as experienced and meritorious men, carried out some tasks for the Teutonic Order during foreign and domestic diplomatic missions. Thus, we can assume that the Grudziądz commandry played huge role in administrative and territorial structure of the Teutonic State in Prussia in the 14th c. and the first half of the 15th c.
