W niniejszym artykule autor przedstawia krytykę fundamentalistycznej hermeneutyki biblijnej autorstwa emerytowanego biskupa Kościoła Episkopalnego Stanów Zjednoczonych Johna Shelby’ego Sponga. Fundamentaliści spoglądają na Pismo Święte jak na nieomylny i bezbłędny tekst, który interpretują literalnie. Spong w swojej krytyce zwraca uwagę na ryzyka i niebezpieczeństwa, jakie niesie za sobą taka hermeneutyka biblijna i proponuje inną metodę interpretacyjną polegającą na odczytaniu tekstów biblijnych – w tym głównie tekstów Nowego Testamentu – jako hagadycznego midraszu (hebr. Midrash Rabbah).

In this article the author discusses the critique of the fundamentalist biblical hermeneutic by John Shelby Spong, a retired American bishop of the Episcopal Church. Fundamentalists view Scripture as an inerrant and infallible text which is to be understood literally. In his critique Spong points to the risks and dangers of such biblical hermeneutics and suggests another interpretive method, mainly the reading of the biblical texts – particularly New Testament ones – as Midrash Rabbah.
