Matthias Zschokke – niemieckojęzyczny pisarz szwajcarski, którego twórczość doczekała się licznych nagród (m. in.: nagroda im. R. Walsera za powieść „Max” 1981 r.; szwajcarska nagroda literacka – Solothurner Literaturpreis – za książkę „Maurice z kurą” 2006 r.) pozostał pisarzem znanym tylko nielicznej rzeszy czytelników. Z pewnością przyczyn tej sytuacji można się doszukiwać w poważnej problematyce egzystencjalnej dominującej w jego utworach literackich. Powieść „Maurice z kurą” jest kolejną próbą konfrontacji człowieka z otaczającą go rzeczywistością. Głównym zamierzeniem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie – na ile możliwe jest porównanie odczuć i zachowań współczesnego protagonisty Maurice’a z bohaterami romantycznymi. Analiza „romantyczności” dotyczy nie tylko charakterystyki jednostki w społeczeństwie, ale również literackiej formy powieści.

Matthias Zschokke, a German-language Swiss writer whose output was honoured with many awards (among others R. Walser award for the novel “Max”(1981); the Swiss literary award Solothurner Literaturpreis for the book “Maurice mit Huhn” (2006)) has remained a writer known to only few readers. The reason for this can be serious, existential subject matter prevailing in his works. The novel “Maurice mit Huhn” is yet another attempt at a confrontation of a man with the surrounding environment. The main aim of the paper is an answer to the question as to what extent it is possible to compare the feelings and behaviour of the modern protagonist Maurice with those of Romantic heroes. The analysis of elements of Romanticism is not limited to characteristics of an individual in the society but also comprises an examination of the literary form of the novel.
