We wczesnych latach 30. XX wieku z wielu rozmaitych przyczyn doszło do powstania systemów totalitarnych, które zebrały wkrótce krwawe żniwo i niewątpliwie stanowiły cywilizacyjny regres. E. Voegelin spoglądał na te procesy z perspektywy niemieckiej humanistycznej tradycji Wissenschaft des Geistes. Tak ujmowane procesy dziejowe zawierają w sobie współczynnik moralny, intelektualny czy duchowy jako swoje ważne ogniwo. Także w późniejszych, powojennych rozrachunkach, na które składa się zarówno opublikowany przezeń cykl wykładów Hitler und die Deutschen (1964), jak i inne jego publikacje, Voegelin jako filozof dziejów czy teoretyk cywilizacji dociekał duchowych uwarunkowań przemian życia społecznego w świecie zachodu, które doprowadziły do rządów Hitlera i Narodowego Socjalizmu. Autor Order and History doszedł do zarysowania pewnej diagnozy regresu cywilizacyjnego, powiązanej z tzw. gnozą polityczną i ukutym przez siebie pojęciem „patologii ducha”. W artykule zestawiam tę diagnozę i wyjaśnienia Voegelina kwestii braku znaczącego oporu Niemców na barbarzyńskie rządy faszystów z opiniami wybranych badaczy na temat biografii i działalności Adolfa Hitlera.

In the early 30’s of the XX century for many different reasons totalitarian regimes, that before long have collected bloody toll and were undoubtedly a civilization regression, came into existence. E. Voegelin looked at these processes from the perspective of the German humanist tradition Wissenschaft des Geistes. Historical processes characterized in such a way, contain moral, intellectual or spiritual factor as their important part. Also in the later, post-war settlements, which consists of both a series of lectures published by him Hitler und die Deutschen (1964), as well as his other publications, Voegelin as a history philosopher and theorist of civilization searched for spiritual conditions that brought on the transformation of social conditions in the Western world, which led to the Hitler and National Socialism’s regime. The author of Order and History outlined a kind of diagnosis of civilization regression, associated with the so-called political gnosis and the term "pathology of the spirit" created by himself. This article compares Voegelin’s diagnosis and interpretations of the lack of significant German resistance to the barbaric rule of the Nazis, with the opinions of selected researchers of the biography and activity of Adolf Hitler.
