In the novels „Wie kommt das Salz ins Meer?“ (“How does the Salt get into the Sea?”, 1977) and „Lange Abwesenheit“ (“Long Absence”, 1980) an Austrian author Brigitte Schwaiger voices the issue of the woman’s position in the family and the society. She describes a difficult and often unsuccessful fight for one’s own femininity and for the right to self-determination. Both novels reveal a strong connection to the life of the author, who grew up in a family of patriarchal structure. The presence of autobiographical elements as well as the issues addressed in both novels by Schwaiger allow to place her literary output in the trend of feminist writing.
