Many EU countries face problems with unemployment, especially affecting young people. That is why many policies on the European, country, and local level have been implemented to help young people find employment opportunities. On the other hand, changing the attitude to work of young people as well as their expectations cause them to search for other possibilities to achieve their desired work–life balance. The results of research aimed at analyzing the situation of self–employed youth in Europe are presented in this article. Running one’s own businesses may become a valuable alternative for young people who would like to make use of their human capital, work independently, and achieve the expected balance between work and personal life.

Ze względu na rosnący poziom bezrobocia wśród osób młodych w wielu krajach Unii Europejskiej podejmowane są liczne inicjatywy, mające na celu udzielenie niezbędnego wsparcia tej grupie pracobiorców. Działania te, w formie szczegółowych, a także ogólnych polityk, realizowane są zarówno na szczeblu międzynarodowym, jak i lokalnym. Z drugiej jednak strony zmieniające się oczekiwania młodego pokolenia względem warunków pracy powodują, że poszukiwane są przez nich inne możliwości zawodowe, takie, które pozwolą na osiągnięcie równowagi między życiem zawodowym a osobistym. W artykule tym przedstawiono wyniki badań ukierunkowanych na analizę sytuacji zawodowej młodych samozatrudnionych w Europie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kontekstu Polski. Samozatrudnienie daje samodzielność, elastyczność i możliwość wykorzystania posiadanego kapitału ludzkiego w sposób zgodny z oczekiwaniami i z tego powodu może ono stanowić interesującą alternatywę dla zatrudnienia na umowę o pracę.
