Labour migration is one of the major social processes of the last decade. The day the first UE members opened their borders to the citizens of new member states, Polish people became travellers migrating within the united Europe seeking employment and or better life without formal obstacles. Around 3 min people have left thus far. This article is devoted to the influ-ence made by labour migration on a family. In the researches conducted (in Poland still not sufficient in number) there are two opposing conceptions presented. According to the first one, labour migrations destroy families. Supporters of the other believe, that migration does not collide with fulfilling some major family functions. It has been stressed that migration of just one of the parents does not hinder a proper family functioning. The aim of the article is to present the results of qualitative research in this phenomenon conducted in June and July, 2010 among both migrants and their partners from Łódź region. The main problem question was how migrants fulfill their role as parents from distance, as well as, how is a role of a home-stay parent modified while the migrant parent is absent.
