Observations on Albanian towns presented in this article have been made during the author’s short stay in that country. Therefore, they do not infringe in any particular way principles of conservation, legal regulations, modes of conservation procedure et.c. The author, professionally interested in the subject, has made some observations while visiting the country, talking to professionals and gathering information from guide-books and leaflets. In Albany conservation service was brought to life after 1944. It was also then that museology department (the Central Board for Museums and Tradition), attached to the Ministry of Culture as well as the Institute for Monuments of Culture (Instituti i Monumente kutures), independent from the Ministry were opened. Several of the preserved major historic structures were distinguished and recognized as towns — museums on the force of a special decree. These towns are covered by complex protection. They include: Berat, Durres, Gjirokastra, Kruja. The author describes their history, condition and measures aimed at their protection.
