The author of the paper attempts to reconstruct the philosophical basis of the ancient and medieval hermeneutics. He analyses the views of Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, early Christian and medieval exegetes on hermeneutics. The structural coincidence between “philosophical conversion” in antiquity and Christian conversion is shown in the paper. The author discusses several historical grounds to define hermeneutic experience in terms of “understanding as self-understanding”.
