Italy is a welfare state based on the principle of viewing the human individual as a supreme value. Its constitution guarantees its citizens a comprehensive catalogue of social rights. This article analyses the influence of the Professorini group members on the formulation of the constitutional foundations of the Italian welfare state during the works of the Constituent Assembly (Ital. Assemblea Costituente). The main aim of the article is to prove that, thanks to Professorini, the principles of Catholic social teaching decisively influenced the process of creating the constitutional foundations of the Italian welfare state. The views of Professorini are discussed in the context of the corresponding constitutional regulations, namely: Art. 1 (first sentence), Art. 2 and Art. 3 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic.
