Kamieniem węgielnym filozofii R. Ingardena jest człowiek. Stanowisko zajęte przez Ingardena w „o odpowiedzialności” oznacza zarówno potwierdzenie trwałego zainteresowania człowiekiem, jak i definitywne odejście od problematyki idealizmu-realizmu. Autor daje charakterystykę moralnego realizmu i podkreśla, że stanowisko to oferuje filozoficzną antropologię, według której ludzkie reakcje na fakty moralne w istotny sposób wiążą się ze sposobem istnienia świata. W „O odpowiedzialności” odnajduje autor rozwinięcie większości elementów moralnego realizmu oraz odwołanie się do przyrodoznawstwa jako pomocnego do zbudowania realistycznej ontologii istoty ludzkiej. Odpowiedzialność wchodzi w zakres wartości moralnych, ale nie ogranicza się do sfery moralnej jako takiej; chodzi bowiem o możliwość skutecznego działania w obrębie przyczynowej struktury świata. Realizm w odniesieniu do faktów moralnych łączy się u Ingardena z głębszym realizmem uważającym działanie za realną siłę w świecie.

Man is the cornerstone of Ingarden's philosophy. His position in his essay “On Responsibility” marks confirmation of his permanent interest in man and the final departure from the idealism-realism problematic. The paper characterises moral realism and suggests that this position comprises a philosophical anthropology, according to which human responses to moral facts are a fact about the way the world is. The author argues that the main lines of moral realism are present in “On Responsibility”, including Ingarden's recourse to scientific realism as the way to a realist ontology of human being. Although responsibility falls among the moral values, it is not limited to the moral sphere alone, since it is related to the broader question, about the possibility of action within the causal structure of the world. In Ingarden's thinking, realism with reference to moral facts unites with a realism that holds that action is a real power.
