Het onderwerp van deze bijdrage is het belang van juridische vertaling in een meertalig Europa. Na het in kaart brengen van de kenmerken van juridische vertaling en juridische communicatie wordt aandacht besteed aan de specifieke situatie van de Europese Unie met het oog op meertaligheid en vertaaldiensten. Hoewel alle officiële talen van de Europese Unie op papier dezelfde status hebben, kijken we naar de echte situatie en vooral naar de vorming van zogenaamde “werktalen” en het gebruik ervan in de belangrijkste instellingen van de Europese Unie. Hierbij biedt de vergelijking van het officiële aantal brontalen in vertaling in 1997 en in 2013 en het aantal vertaalde pagina’s per doeltaal een interessant perspectief. De sterk dominante positie van Engels zal duidelijk zijn. Als casestudy wordt de positie onderzocht van twee minder gesproken Europese talen, het Nederlands en het Tsjechisch.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest znaczenie tłumaczenia prawniczego w wielojęzycznej Europie. Po scharakteryzowaniu specyfiki tłumaczeń prawniczych i komunikacji prawniczej autor artykułu koncentruje uwagę na specyficznej pozycji, jaką zajmuje Unia Europejska w kontekście wielojęzyczności i usług tłumaczeniowych. Chociaż oficjalnie wszystkie języki Unii Europejskiej mają ten sam status, autor artykułu bada faktyczną sytuację i podejmuje temat formowania się tzw. „working languages” używanych w najważniejszych instytucjach Unii Europejskiej. Ciekawą perspektywę badawczą daje autorowi porównanie oficjalnej liczby tłumaczonych w 1997 i 2013 roku języków źródłowych z liczbą przetłumaczonych stron na każdy język docelowy. Silnie dominująca pozycja języka angielskiego nie budzi zdziwienia. Autor bada pozycję dwóch europejskich języków niszowych, niderlandzkiego i czeskiego.

The subject of the following contribution is the importance of legal translation in multilingual Europe. After mapping the characteristics of legal translation and legal communication, attention will be paid to the specific situation of the European Union in the context of multilingualism and translation services. Even though all the official languages of the European Union have the same status on paper, we will take a look at the real situation and especially at the forming of the so called “working languages” and the use of them in the most important institutions of the European Union. An interesting perspective will give us the comparison of the official amount of source languages in translation in 1997 and in 2013 and the amount of translated pages per target language. The strong dominating position of English will be obvious. As a case study, the position of two less spoken European languages, Dutch and Czech, is explored.
