The paper presents selected distinctive features of Internet hypertexts. The main features of Internet hypertexts are: (i) non-linear structure, and (ii) the co-existence of text elements in tandem with other semiotic components, such as various images, graphic elements, music sequences, movie parts. The non-sequential structure of texts leads to their specific, selective and fragmentary reception. By activating hyperlinks, the receiver decides which modules (information units) and in which chronological order he opens, sees and reads them. The article finishes with the following question: Do hypertexts constitute artefacts of cognitive character or are they ‘texts in (human) brains', i.e. mental modules existing in a similar way on the part of the receiver?
