Workmen’s setttlement had appeared at the territory of Westphalia before the process of industrialization of the Ruhr area began. The oldest settlement dating from 1667 has been found in Hagen. Subsequent settlements were founded in 18th-, 19th- and 20th centuries. The article deals with town — planning principles underlying establishment of workmen’s settlements, with technologies applied and material used in building of worker’ houses. Although the majority of buildings are preserved in a good state, some of them, however, need immediate restoring, which is caused by the fact th a t for a long time they have been used improperly. The workers inhabiting those settlements want to preserve their houses and cannot agree to their demolition. The author is of the opinion that there should be worked out plans of workmen’s settlements preservation although no respective regulations have been issued so far. In the conclusion the author suggests preparing criteria for the workmen’s houses evaluation.
