The opening section of the speech addresses, in a note of gratitude, the Polonicum Award Committee, the Polish Institute in Sofia and the experts who pronounced their opinion on the submitted applications. A guiding thought in the address upholds the idea that personal efforts to popularize Polish culture are effective enough only when they become the hub of vibrant cooperation in a community of friends, colleagues and institutions. In this particular case, the author shares her personal experience of Poland and Polish culture, along with that gleaned through her participation in such an academic community, tracing the stages of her academic career. She refers to current and historical parameters of the exceptionally intensive Bulgarian reception of Polish culture including Emil Bassat’s recently published book For Poland, with Love. The Bulgarian Voices of Polish Literature [Za Polsha s liubov. Balgarskite glasove na polskata literatura] which collects interviews with seventeen contemporary Bulgarian translators; while tracing the friendship between Tadeusz S. Grabowski, Independent Poland’s first ambassador to Bulgaria, Bulgarian scholar Boyan Penev and a number of other eminent Bulgarian intellectuals, which resulted in the publication of a number of seminal periodicals and books. The speech is thematically bound to the subject matter of prof. Margreta Grigorova’s doctoral thesis - Bolesław Prus’s acclaimed novel The Doll - which left her reviewers with the impression that she had actually spent time in Warsaw (which, in effect, happened some time later). Shortly after the successful defence of her thesis, she sees in a night dream herself receiving a telegram with an invitation by Bolesław Prus, which she accepts, and, as the dream goes, Grigorova “initiates many encounters with Poland, the Polish culture and the Poles”.
