The article suggests one of the modern variants of reading a novel by a well-known Irish writer that appeared at the turn of the century, on the very border not only of two centuries but also of two different visions of the world. The work is viewed, first of all, as a novel in where many aesthetic lines of different epochs intercross. The analysis focuses on the process of crossing various boundaries which contributes to the peculiarity of Joyce’s artistic world and the concept of personality embodied in it. The analysis conducted on the narrative, plot-compositional and ideological levels allows to reveal the essential features of the author's artistic world. Creation of a broad interpretation field provides an opportunity to study the main problems of coexistence of the whole and the part, the world and the hero in the novel structure. The main subject of research is the specificity of the structures and boundaries destroyed by the hero, as well as his attempt to create some kind of an alternative universe. The article presents not only the novel's place in the historical and literary context, but also its place among other Bildungsroman novels of this time.

Artykuł sugeruje jeden z nowoczesnych wariantów czytania powieści znanego irlandzkiego pisarza, który pojawił się na przełomie wieków, na samej granicy nie tylko dwóch wieków, ale także dwóch odmiennych wizji świata. Prace są postrzegane przede wszystkim jako powieść, w której połączono liczne linie estetyczne różnych epok, ujawniając w ten sposób jego proceduralny kontekst diachroniczny i synchroniczny. Przedmiotem analizy jest problem przekraczania różnorodnych granic, które decydują o osobliwości świata artystycznego Joyce'a i pojęciu osobowości w nim zawartym. Analiza przeprowadzona była na poziomach narracyjnym, kompozycyjnym i ideologicznym pozwoliła ujawnić istotne cechy twórczego świata autora. Stworzenie szerokiego pola interpretacyjnego daje możliwość zbadania głównych problemów współistnienia całości i części, świata i bohatera w strukturze powieści. Głównym przedmiotem badań jest specyfika struktur i granic zniszczonych przez bohatera, a także próba stworzenia innego rodzaju wszechświata alternatywnego. W artykule przedstawiono nie tylko miejsce powieści w kontekście historycznym i literackim, ale także jego miejsce pośród innych powieści Bildungsroman w tym czasie.
