Artykuł przedstawia pojęcie psychologicznej traumy i jej wpływ na zdolność formułowania spójnej narracji, która umożliwia integrację doświadczeń traumy z całokształtem życiorysu. Można by się spodziewać z lingwistycznego puntktu widzenia, że chcąc ująć w słowa nie dający się opisać horror traumy narrator sięgnie po metaforę. Tak jednak nie jest, ponieważ trauma niszczy zdolność do myślenia symbolicznego. Skupiamy naszą uwagę na braku wyrażeń metaforycznych na początkowym etapie narracji w dyskursie na temat doświadczonej traumy, a następnie na pojawianiu się specyficznych typów metafor pojęciowych, takich jak na przykład CIAŁO to KONTENER czy ŻYCIE to PODRÓŻ. Sugerujemy, że analiza używania przenośni – lub ich braku w analizowanym dyskursie – może pozwolić na wgląd w procesy radzenia sobie z traumą i leczenia jej skutków.
