Jak pokazują doświadczenia zagraniczne procesowi metropolizacji towarzyszy kształtowanie się terytorialnych orientacji politycznych, które muszą być oparte o identyfikację z danym terytorium. Ten rodzaj identyfikacji kształtuje się również w regionie metropolitalnym Trójmiasta, którego policentryczna struktura jest katalizatorem integracji. Sondaż uliczny przeprowadzony w Gdańsku i Gdyni w 2014 r. potwierdził silną lokalną autoidentyfikację mieszkańców obu miast. Jednak wykazał także istnienie fundamentów tożsamości metropolitalnej m. in. w formie silnego utożsamiania się respondentów z Trójmiastem czy dostrzegania wspólnoty celów rozwojowych obu miast, a co za tym idzie konieczności współpracy w ramach jednej organizacji metropolitalnej.

As foreign experiences show, the process of metropolization is accompanied by the formation of territorial political orientations, which must be based on identification with the territory. This type of identification is also occurring in the Tri-City metropolitan region, whose polycentric structure is a catalyst for the process. On the one hand, a street survey in Gdańsk and Gdynia in 2014 confirmed strong local identification of the inhabitants of both cities. On the other hand, it also demonstrated the existence of the foundations of metropolitan identity, among others, in the form of strong identification of the respondents with the Tri-City area or the perception of common development goals of both cities, and thus the need to cooperate within one metropolitan organization.
