The analysis presented in this paper focuses on Jephthah’s vow and his sacrifice of-fered to God of his only daughter as its consequence. The purpose of this analysis is to answer the question about God’s attitude to this event. In Judges 11:29-40, this is con-sidered both in terms of literary criticism and in the canonical context. The first perspective, in combination with the exegetical analysis, suggests that this test in its original form was quite ambivalent in the assessment of the entire event. Its negative assessment of child sacrifice can only be inferred from the broadly understood deuteronomistic context in which the entire event takes on the characteristics of illustration of the effects of vague provisions (Deuteronomy 12:31; 18:10) and too literal fulfilment of them (Deuteronomy 23:22-24). At the same time, it is also a warning against attempts to manipulate God by offering “bribes” to Him (Deuteronomy 16:19). In the broader canonical context (especially in relation to Genesis 22), Judges 11:29-40 already appears clearly as a negatively assessed event, while Jephthah – though sincerely seeking God – presents himself more as a follower of the Canaanites and not a follower of the God of Israel.
