Between 9th and 22nd September 1939, the biggest battle of the polish campaign, took place near the Bzura river. The battle was started by the attack of polish forces, under the command of gen. Tadeusz Kutrzeba. As the battle raged on, German forces had retaken the initiative, which led to the complete encirclement and breakdown of the polish armies. After the end of the WWII a discussion was started by combatants (and military histo-rians who didn’t fought in September 1939), whether the battle of Kutno had to be lost by the Polish Army. Some authors tried to find flaws committed by individual commanders, so it took some time before publishers started to focus on the heroism, of the soldiers. Since 1956, the discussion concerning the battle near the Bzura river was moved to „Wojskowy Przegląd Historyczny”, which was a continuation of the pre-war magazine „Przegląd Historyczno-Wojskowy”. The historical analysis of the polish campaign 1939 quickly became one of the major topics in “Wojskowy Przegląd Historyczny” (between 1956-1990 only the articles about the Polish People's Army and the Red Army during WWII, where more popular), and the Bzura river battle was the most important of them. Most of these articles where published between the first issue of “WPH”, in 1956 and the seventies, but some articles where published also in the eighties.
