The author puts the origin of guild organization of weavers in the town of Police in North-eastern Bohemia in the context of economic development of this small historic town in the 16th century and concisely traces the origin of weaver’s guilds in Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia from the beginning of the 14th century. In detail, he analyses the weaver’s statutes issued in 1556 by Břevnov monastery abbot Jan III. Chotovský from Chotov, which were reinstated in 1668 by abbot Tomas Sartorius, and the explanatory appendix to these statutes from 1685. He takes into account data concerning weavers within Police monastic estate which appear in fiscal records and the Theresian register. Later on, he compares conditions at Police and Broumov estates in the 18th century, where all the weavers, living in the villages, were members of the guild and where the production of linen reached substantial proportions. In the final part of the study, the author attempts to incorporate both estates into a larger “proto-industrialist” region, which included Saxony, Silesia, North and East Bohemia, and North Moravia, and which was characteristic for the production of linen that was exported even overseas. In connection with this, he also mentions the importance of the weekly linen markets that took place in the town of Police for more than 150 years (from the end of the 1820s until 1879).
