Artykuł przedstawia nowe pola empirycznego zastosowania koncepcji zarządzania wielopoziomowego (multi- level governance - MLG), opracowanej i stosowanej głównie w odniesieniu do Unii Europejskiej. Konfrontacja założeń koncepcji MLG z problematyką zarządzania metropolitalnego wskazuje, że mechanizmy funkcjonowania metropolii noszą wiele cech wielopoziomowego systemu, choć ich specyfika różni się od tej, do której przywykliśmy, śledząc dyskurs dotyczący integracji europejskiej. Różnice te nie podważają jednak sensu użycia MLG jako narzędzia porządkującego w badaniach organizacji obszarów metropolitalnych. Szczególnie zasadne jest stosowanie koncepcji w przypadku luźnych rozwiązań instytucjonalnych, które pozwalają na zachowanie warunku zarządzania wielopoziomowego - istnienia wielu autonomicznych aktorów powiązanych wzajemnymi zależnościami.

The article presents new empirical applications of the concept of multi-level governance (MLG), elaborated and used mainly in studies of the European integration. The metropolitan discourse and the theory on MLG in the European Union have many features in common. The author stresses that MLG gives an interesting perspective in metropolitan studies, especially in the case of loose institutional metropolitan structures, which complies with the main assumption of multi-level governance, i.e. interactions between many autonomous yet interconnected actors.
