Abstracts

Arnold Kriedte (17.07.1869–4.10.1945) is associated by the residents of Grudziądz with the bookstore he managed at Mickiewicza, at the corner of Małogroblowa, and with his publishing activity, such as address books of Grudziądz of 1905– –1913, tourist guides and numerous postcards with unique views of the city streets. The activity of Arnold Kriedte presented in the article is an excellent example of use of educational organisation – Deutsche Schulverein – in favour of preserving the identity and national distinctness of Germans in the Polish state in the interwar period, which was the time of greate tensions. The personal involvement of Kriedte, as well as professional experience and organisational capacity were applied in developing Deutsche Schulverein, which was crowned with building a Goetheschule. In subsequent years the school played a huge role as it became an important cultural and educational institution for the Germans inhabiting Pomerania, also used for propaganda purposes by the Nazis. Moreover, after the Second World War the institution carried out educational activity as Technical School Complex. It is worth noticing that A. Kriedte’s activity within Deutsche Schulverein in the interwar period correlated with his activity within other German organisations. He was a coordinator of the theatres, such as Deutsche Bühne (German Stage), and Verband der Buchhändler in Polen (Association of German Booksellers in Poland), in which he held a chair until 1934. Their main task, similarily as Deutsche Schulverein, was to cultivate the German culture and traditions.
