Mazovia and Podlasie, the traditional terrain of the petty gentry, have preserved myriad relics of Old Polish spiritual and material culture. One such example is the plain sepulchre of the Mroczki family in the parish cemetery in Kałuszyn (county of Mińsk Mazowiecki). The sepulchre was built in the form of an earth-covered dugout, decorated with simple architectural detail carved in local field stones. The ancient nature of this object is evidenced by its name – pieczara (cave), used up to this day.
