Relacje kościelno-państwowe po 1989 r. były efektem przyjętej przez nowe demokratyczne elity koncepcji niekonfliktowej koegzystencji z Kościołem i restytucji jego materialnej bazy. Katolicyzm polski umocnił swą pozycję instytucjonalną i pozostał, mimo pewnych wahań, znaczącą siłą wpływu społecznego i politycznego. Nadal wywiera przemożny wpływ kulturowy. Z drugiej strony postępują oddolne przejawy sekularyzacji towarzyszące w Europie systemowi demokratycznemu i mechanizmom rynkowym. W perspektywie nadchodzących dekad nie należy się spodziewać radykalnej zmiany tego paradygmatu.

Church-state relations in Poland after the democratic transformation in 1989 were shaped by the new democratic elites acting on the principle of non-antagonizing coexistence with the Roman Catholic Church as well as the restitution of its property and infrastructure. As a result, Polish Catholicism consolidated its institutional position, while remaining, albeit with some turbulences, a significant force of social and political influence. It is still an overwhelming cultural force. On the other hand, a grass root secularization makes progress within society, due to both democratic and market reforms. However, one should not expect a radical change in the decades to come.
