The aim of the paper was to explore vocabulary resources of heritage language learners in Norway and to compare them to those of their peer native speakers in Poland. Both groups showed a good passive knowledge of most frequent words. In the test of productive vocabulary, the lexical markers of texts written by both groups of learners were similar, apart from the lexical correctness parameter which included orthography. Polish heritage pupils, due to their limited contact with the written language, as opposed to Polish pupils, have considerable problems with proper spelling. On the whole however, surprisingly enough, Polish pupils did not excel much their Norwegian peers.
