The article presents a short overview of the origins and history of heritage tourism in China. Facing ‘three crises of faith’ after the Cultural Revolution, Chinese people began to turn towards the emotion of nostalgia in order to find themselves in the new social order. At the same time, in an effort to recover the Chinese economy, and to politically indoctrinate the people, Party leaders launched a patriotic education campaign in a form of patriotic tourism, later known as ‘red tourism’.
