The ruins of an early mediaeval town have been the focal point of excavations conducted for the past thirty years by Polish archeologists in Old Dongola, the capital of Christian Nubia. A monastic complex was discovered in 1991. The object was built of mud bricks and baked bricks bound with mud mortar. Paintings and inscriptions are preserved on the walls while fragments of murals and sculptural decorations (ceramic grills and stone stelae) were part of the debris. On-the-spot conservation of the walls and murals was carried out immediately upon their discovery. The author considers the possibilities of a complete conservation programme.
