The article aims to briefly describe the cultural context and philosophical heritage of the Han Kitab literature. It also introduces the reader to the thought of China’s arguably most eloquent and innovative Sino-Islamic scholar, Liu Zhi. Liu’s multidimensional concepts are deeply rooted in the Chinese philosophical tradition (Confucianism, Legalism, Buddhism) while simultaneously borrowing heavily from the theology of Sufi Islam.
