In his report, Hieromonk Simeon (Tomachinsky), director of one of the largest religious publishing houses in Russia, raises the question about the future of the book. Will a traditional book be able to compete with electronic books, video, and the Internet? One gets the impression that the young generation has already made their choice and, by far, not in favour of the traditional book. However, Fr. Simeon has a different view. The book is indispensable to the Christian tradition. Careful reading of a book can be compared to the process of talking to the author, while perception of information through the screen is usually sketchy and superficial. At the same time, new electronic means are not to be dismissed altogether. Sometimes it is the new electronic media that can build a bridge between the treasures of Christian culture and the young people. New promising trends in publishing, such as Print-ondemand technology and multimedia editions, also keep the traditional book alive. Only through the effective use of both traditional and modern technologies can cultural and religious values be transferred for the benefit of the new generation.
