Do czasu pojawienia się w XVII wieku nowoczesnych holenderskich, a następnie również angielskich i francuskich kompanii, to nieformalne sieci handlowe umożliwiły w epoce wczesnonowożytnej gwałtowny rozwój handlu zamorskiego. W XVI i pierwszej połowie XVII wieku sieci organizowane przez domy handlowe portugalskich nowych chrześcijan odegrały zasadniczą rolę w handlu atlantyckim, natomiast brazylijscy nowi chrześcijanie w znacznym stopniu przyczynili się do rozwoju gospodarki opartej na niewolniczych plantacjach. Co najmniej 20% potencjału produkcyjnego brazylijskich plantacji cukrowych bezpośrednio kontrolowali nowochrześcijańscy plantatorzy i kupcy-plantatorzy. Był to znaczny udział, ale zarazem nie potwierdza on rozpowszechnionej opinii o stworzeniu przez nich we współpracy z amsterdamskimi sefardyjskimi Żydami brazylijskiej gospodarki cukrowej.

Until the emergence in the 17th century of modern Dutch, and next English and French trade companies, it were the informal trade networks which enabled the rapid development of international commerce in the early modern era. On the one hand, in the 16th and in the first half of the 17th century networks organized by trade houses of the Portuguese New Christians played a major role in the Atlantic trade, and on the other, New Christians who settled in the colonial Brazil contributed substantially to the development of the slave plantation-based economy. At least 20% of the production potential of Brazilian sugar plantations was under the direct control of New Christian planters and merchant- planters. Although it was a very substantial share, it does not substantiate the widespread opinion that those were New Christians who, acting together with Amsterdam Sephardi Jews, created the Brazilian sugar-based economy.
