This draft is the trial version of an entry on płacz [crying] for the Dictionary of Folk Linguistic Stereotypes. The work involved, firstly, organizing documentation (covering around 1000 instances of the use of the verb płakać [to cry]. The uses in question come mainly from folk texts written in verse), and – secondly – an attempt to capture the linguistic regularities and tendencies in the collected material. Having described the semantic relations of the verb płakać with other verbs, the author moves on to describe the connotations associated with the verb in question. In keeping with the convention adopted in the trial version of the Dictionary, the author tries to characterise the stereotype of crying [stereotyp płaczu] by delineating its semantic categories. For the verb płakać [to cry], the superordinate categories are the subject (the one who is crying) and reasons for crying. Both of these categories must be described jointly, as – depending on who the the subject of crying is – the reasons for crying vary. The categories of the subject and reasons imply, respectively, the following categories, i.e. the effect, place, and time. Outside these implications, lies the category of manner (corresponding to the notion of features in the description of nouns). The explication part is supplemented with the above mentioned documentation (i.e. 144 quotations that come from folk songs).
