ARCHIVE AND DOCUMENTATION What is an archive and what are its different modes of existence? Being both of time and of material, as an index of evolving attitudes towards objects and subjects, contingency of time, discourse and culture, the archive takes on an active role in creating the identity and maintaining the continuity of artworks. This chapter considers the physical form of the archive, its heterogeneity, serendipity and dispersion. It looks at the way in which the archive harbors a variety of documentation of the works’ past manifestations reports, instructions, scores, contracts, correspondence, and manuals. This chapter is a part of my larger argument which concerns the identity of artworks that is established on the basis of the physical and the virtual archive the latter being a non-physical dimension of tacit knowledge, memory, skill, and metadata related to the archive’s own functionality.
