In the 15th and 17th centuries a water mill in the commune of Slup (formerly known as Cule) belonged to one of the biggest mills in Moravia. It was linked with the river Dyja, the existence of which was noted in historic sources from 1302. Most probably the mill was b u ilt not earlier than in the mid-15th century upon the commission of the Women’s Cisterian monastery. In the fo llow in g years its subsequent owners rebuilt and modernized it many times. In 1870 it became the property of the state and in 1876 it was recognized to be a monument of culture and was passed onto the care of the Museum of Engineering in Bern. Most of the problems were encountered in the reconstruction of the o rig in a l late-Renaissance technical equipment, ju s t as none o f its elements had got preserved. The reconstruction of architectonic elements was a simple task, because major parts were preserved. The major problem arose during adaptation work. On the one hand, it was necessary to present the building in its original form; on the other, skillfully introduce a display of museum collections on milling. There were many proposals put forward. Finally, a display of milling techniques was placed in the lived-in part of the mill. The main aim of the display was to present changes in the processing of grain. In the ground floor there are items linked with the mill work performed at that time at Slupia and on the canal. We find here original machines, elements of milling wheels found during the excavation work, oak pales coming from the construction of the canal and the remaining parts of the plaster.
