Artykuł ten jest analizą porównawczą powieści V. S. Naipaula The Enigma of Arrival i obrazu Giorgio de Chirico Zagadka przybycia. Związek między oboma dziełami wykracza poza zbieżnosć tytułów. Powieść i obraz zdają przenikać się wzajemnie tak, że możliwe jest postrzeganie książki jako rozbudowanej ekfrazy obrazu de Chirico, podczas gdy obraz może być odczytywany jako motyw autotematyczności w powieści. Tym, co łączy oba dzieła, jest idea chronotopu. Wszystkie najważniejsze aspekty obrazu de Chirico, tj. symbolicznie przedstawienie wewnętrznego rozdarcia, krajobraz miejski, dwuznacznosć i niepewność sugerowana tematem podróży, nakładanie się teraźniejszości i przeszłości w architekturze budynków, nawiązują do głównych motywów powieści. Ostatecznie obraz de Chirico staje się wizualną reprezentacją chronotopu progu, kiedy podczas pobytu w Nowym Jorku, a następnie w Londynie narrator zyskuje świadomość kryzysu własnej tożsamości, co determinuje jego dalsze losy. W konsekwencji, słowa Bachtina odnoszące się do reprezentacyjnego potencjału chronotopu ulegają dosłownej materializacji i konkretyzacji w obrazie de Chirico. Wzajemnemu oddziaływaniu powieści i obrazu dodatkowo towarzyszy próba przekraczania granic literatury i sztuki.
