Autorka omawia kryzys gospodarczy, jaki dotknął kapitułę katedralną w Santiago de Compostela w latach 1780–1834. Kapituła ta była jedną z najważniejszych instytucji kościelnych w Hiszpanii. Jej gospodarka opierała się na powinności jeszcze średniowiecznej, mianowicie na daninie zwanej Voto de Santiago (według legendy miała się ona narodzić w związku ze zwycięstwem nad Maurami pod Clavijo w 844 r.). Płacili ją wszyscy chłopi z obszaru Królestwa Kastylii, co wyjaśnia olbrzymie bogactwo kapituły. Jednakże w 1780 r. chłopi zaczęli sprzeciwiać się płaceniu Voto. Na dodatek w tym okresie produkcja rolnicza w Hiszpanii zmagała się z wieloma problemami. W sumie dla kapituły oznaczało to początek poważnego kryzysu ekonomicznego. Autorka analizuje strategie kapituły z Santiago stosowane przy rozwiązywaniu trapiących ją problemów ekonomicznych oraz trudności związane z wypracowaniem skutecznego rozwiązania.

The author of the article discusses the economic crisis of the chapter of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela from 1780 to 1834. The chapter was one of the most important ecclesiastical institutions in Spain; its economy was based on a medieval offering, the Voto de Santiago. This source of revenue had legendary origins: the Battle of Clavijo of 844. The Voto was paid by the peasants of the Crown of Castile: this explains the enormous wealth of the chapter. Nevertheless, from 1780 the peasants were opposed to paying the Voto. In addition, agricultural production in Spain was beset by problems at the time. This marked the beginning of a major economic crisis for the chapter. The author of the article examines the strategies of the chapter of Santiago to solve its economic problems and the difficulties with coming up with an effective solution.
