Artykuł skupia się na roli, jaką socjologia miasta może odegrać w ramach socjologii na początku XXI wieku. Autor przywołuje koncepcje amerykańskiej socjolog Saskii Sassen – jednego z najważniejszych socjologów miasta naszych czasów. Według Sassen miasto ponownie może odegrać rolę „soczewki” socjologicznej: najistotniejsze współczesne trendy zmian społecznych są widoczne właśnie w mieście. Artykuł porusza takie zagadnienia szczegółowe, jak: koncepcja miasta globalnego, transnacjonalizacja oraz kwestia władzy zgromadzonej w miastach.

The paper focuses on the role which urban sociology can play within the sociology as such at the beginning of the 21st century. Author recalls the concepts of American sociologist Sasskia Sassen who is one of the leading scholars in the area of urban sociology of our times. According to Sassen city can once again play a role of the “lens” for sociology: in a city the most essential current trends of social change are visible. My contribution tackles particular issues such as: the concept of global city, the notion of transantionalisation and the issue of power of cities.
