The purpose of the paper is to answer the question whether the cognitive theory of conceptual metaphor enriched with core knowledge systems can provide the solution to the issue of acquiring accurate numerical representations by children? The first part of the text is devoted to the presentation of cognitive metaphor theory and its theoretical problems. The goal of second part is to enrich Lakoff & Johnson’s theory with systems of core knowledge, to avoid the mentioned theoretical difficulties. In the last part I present the connectionist model of the process of acquiring accurate numerical representations by children. The model is based on modified theory of cognitive metaphor.
