The article describes a phenomenon of Byronism in Polish romantic literature. In authoress opinion there are five types of Byronic codes (systems of signs), which were present not only in literary texts, but also in 19th century cultural behaviours. The first two (aristocratic and scandalous code) are based on Byron’s biography as English lord and a famous European poet. The third one (heroic and patriotic code) is connected with political actions of Byron. The next one is martyrish (a post-mortal legend of Byron as national hero in Greece). The fifth one is intercultural and transnational (it evokes the idea of connecting various cultures and nations), whilst the last code shows Byronism as literary language and poetics of a genre (f. ex.: oriental tale). These types of codes were consciously realised in Polish Romanticism, even in the last part of this movement (in C.K. Norwid’s works).
