In order to introduce the realities of life in the medieval town, it is worth expanding the research with the demographic perspective. Many a time no direct data concerning the population of a given centre is available. Nevertheless, making use of indirect data it is possible to produce some interesting results. Reconstructing the town boundaries in the past enables to estimate how many people it boasted. It was assumed in the study that the house was occupied by a family of 5-5,5 members on average. Two phases of the city limits can be identified in Pobiedziska during the Middle Ages (fig. 1). Phase 1. has been dated to the second half of the 13th century and comprised of circa 60 plots dwelt by about 300-330 inhabitants. In phase 2. (ca. the 15th century) in oppidum about 650-750 persons lived on ca. 130-136 plots, whilst in the half of the 16th century – there were about 950 (not more than 1000) residents. The first source to present the population structure in the town more precisely is the registration from the end of the 18th century. According to the data it contains, Pobiedziska were inhabited at that time by 791 individuals. The list includes also numerous information regarding Greater Poland as a whole. It may turn out useful in the future research into the population structure, confessions and occupations. Having established the number of inhabitants in a given centre in various time brackets, one can indirectly discuss the town development and transformations. The same town was a completely different place in the beginning of its development (for example in the half of the 13th century) and in the end of the Middle Ages. It can be observed not only during the study on the town infrastructure but on its spatial and demographical development as well.
