In 1983—1985 the picture on wood depicting Our Lady and the Child in Hodegetna's style, described on this territory as "Piekarski” type was subjected to conservation. The picture belongs to a parish church of StSt Catherine and Stanislaus in Pustelnik in the province of Siedlce. Designed on a plane of an upright rectangle measuring 1 0 4 .3X 7 1 ,2 cm, painted in a distemper technique on linden wood, it has been repainted several times over centuries. The author of the painting is unknown; still, certain stylistic and technological details make it possible to ascribe it to the school of Little Poland, or — to be more precise — to a Cracovian one, and date it back to 1460. The source information revealed so fa r does not imply how and on whose initiative and when the painting came from Cracow to Mazovia, which makes it difficult to study its history. The conservation of the painting changed its colouring to some extent. Repainted several times, after the removal of subsequent coatings, the picture showed its 15th century form. Prior to conservation the condition of the painting was poor. The boards were unstuck and cracked behind the repaintings, attacked by w-ood-eaters; the mortar was brittle and scaling. Painting’s stratigraphy was complicated and consisted of 27 technological and 5 chronological layers. As found out on the basis of the examination, the technique and technology of the painting are in accordance with analogous examples of the 15th century art of Little Poland. A number of chemical, physical, dendrological examinations were made including identification of pigments, binding agents, mortars, wood, photographies in white light, IR, UV, X-ray and colour photographies. On the basis of the interpretation of stratigraphy, technology, condition and history of the painting a programme for conservation work has been worked out, taking into account its future use (jin the church which is now under construction). The conservation consisted in removing all coatings (except the groundwork); it covered technical conservation of the underpainting (impregnation, gluing, filling) and the pa inting itself as well as the colour making-up of missing parts in the painters’ layer and gildings. It also included the designing of a suitable frame resembling preserved genuine Gothic framings. As a result of the above conservation practice a Gothic painting, dating back to ca 1460, having high artistic and historic values, was uncovered. The painting enriches a w e ll- known group of pictures of Our Lady of "Piekarski” type. According to the present knowledge, this is the farthest north-going example in the country representing the school of Little Poland. A stylistic analysis of the uncovered painting should become a subject of a separate study for a specialist, i.e. -art historian. Nonetheless, certain suggestions and a n a logies can be drawn even now: the painting seems to be the closest to depictions from Wojkowice Kościelne, Jazowsk, Kęty and St. Mark's Church in Cracow.
