The article presents the complexity of the interactions between the world of the homeless and the institutionalized world. These interactions take the form of wandering, “groping” during which a homeless lacks a guide, which appears to only increase his or her confusion. The institutionalized world is internally differentiated by the criterion of functions of institutions in the lives of the homeless, pointing to the institutional forms of “survival” (charity, help from “the chick from MOPS” [MOPS - City Center of Social Assistance] and the action of providing the homeless with information), and institutional attempts to involve the homeless in social roles (a homeless - inhabitant, employee, or user of social services). I have conducted a participatory research in the world of homeless men living on the streets outside the system of social assistance, which revealed on the one hand serious difficulties in moving around the “institutionalized” world, and on the other hand the mobilization of a homeless to conduct almost perfect arrangement of his or her life, thus ensuring his or her survival.
