Nationalist writer Müfide Ferit Tek published her novel “Pervaneler” in 1924. She explained how foreign schools mediated cultural imperialism after the War of Independence and how these schools alienated the new generation from their own culture. The novel emphasizes the importance of education in Turkey in the process of transition from Empire to Republic – the novel is based on this thesis. The events in the novel, which deals with the impact of missionary activities of foreign schools on national identity and culture, take place around the “B yzantine College”, which was founded by Americans and whose goal was to spread American influence in these lands. Another issue highlighted in the novel “Pervaneler” is the impact of marriages with foreign women on national culture and upbringing. In her work, the author also creates a Polish heroine named Leh, or Polish Andree. The author conveys her messages to society through this heroine. The aim is to create a patriotic example by exploiting the love and sympathy of the Turkish society towards Poland and thus attract the reader’s attention.
